Dan Boulton Reel for HAVAS

Dan James Boulton - Director, Photographer, DoP

Hey Flo and Ben, It was lovely to see you. I put together a bespoke reel after we chatted about JBL’s modular social films. I hope the below pieces can speak to that ability to create modular assets to highlight different product features while also creating cohesive sequences with high production values.

I’ll start with this short piece. It showcases my ability to capture lifestyle and tech effectively. The use of the parallax in this film worked to great effect in demonstrating the different features of the earbuds. It also feels very in keeping with the previous JBL work that I’ve seen.

Here’s an ad shot and directed by me for the National Lottery off the back of one of their TVCs. We shot a variety of different performances to create edits of ‘hopeful’ ticket holders and ‘winning’ ticket holders. It’s my understanding that they would push different films according to performance analytics on socials seeing how people responded to different faces and emotions.

I mentioned this Morrisons job that I shot at Christmas. I was called in the day before without a brief to create these films off the back of a TVC. Beyond these edits, we also improvised some other executions where I rigged the camera to the trolley and had the actors walk down the isles. These additional assets are going to be used for brand new executions later in the year.

This McCain Air Fried chips ad is one of my recent faves. I had a lot of creative control. As always I directed and shot it all myself. It’s punchy, it’s fast it’s colourful and fun (the brief was basically a one-pager with a mood board). Again, I achieved this with a tiny crew. Shot in all in one day. it contains multiple techniques combining stop motion, cinematography and lenticular 3D images. The film started out as a pre-roll YouTube ad and was upgraded to VOD and TVC a few days before the live date. The images were high res so some of the key moments were turned into print assets, 6 sheets and so on. The client got bang for their buck, considering we made for just under £38k

Further on the topic of modular assets. These IAMS films were part of a 3-day shoot filming 48 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. We had them performing a range of different movements and tasks that could speak to a range of different proof points, and health benefits for different products. To make this asset library work on the budget we had, I shot and directed it all myself with a very small team.
